Three tools dominate how people study a hard concept today. Each of them gets the facts right. Each of them fails a struggling learner at exactly the same moment — the moment where intuition would have to form.
The textbook: correct, and frozen
A diagram of a four-stroke engine shows you four states. What it cannot show you is the transition between them, which is the only part anybody actually finds difficult. The reader is asked to animate it in their head — which is precisely the skill they do not have yet.
The language model: fluent, and flat
Ask a language model why entropy increases and you get three accurate, well-written paragraphs. If you understood the topic already, they are excellent. If you did not, you now have a longer thing you do not understand. Fluency is not the same as clarity, and prose is a poor container for anything spatial.
The video: clear, and deaf
A good explainer video does animate the mechanism. But it cannot be asked a question. If frame 42 loses you, the video keeps going. Every learner is served the same explanation at the same pace, and the only controls are pause and rewind.
It fails to build intuition.
What the three have in common
None of them are watching you. A teacher at a whiteboard reads the room, slows down at the step that lost people, and redraws the same idea a second way. That loop — draw, read, adjust — is the actual mechanism of teaching, and it is the one thing none of the three can do.
